Spring Renewal: Refresh Your Home With These Healthy Home Tips

As an interior designer, I’ve long believed that our homes should restore us. Spring renewal is not about a frantic overhaul or chasing trends; it’s about thoughtful adjustments that align your space with how you want to feel. Calm. Energised. Grounded. Uplifted.
Here’s how to refresh your home this season with wellness firmly in mind.
1. Let the Light In — Properly
Natural light is one of the most powerful mood enhancers available to us, and yet it’s often underutilised.
Start with the obvious: clean the windows inside and out. You’ll be amazed at the difference. Then assess your window treatments. Heavy winter drapes can be swapped for linen sheers or lighter fabrics that diffuse rather than block daylight.
Position mirrors strategically to bounce light deeper into the room, and if you’re rearranging furniture, ensure nothing substantial is obstructing your brightest windows.
Light isn’t simply decorative — it regulates our circadian rhythm and boosts serotonin. A brighter home quite literally changes how you feel.

2. Declutter With Intention, Not Aggression
Spring cleaning has earned a reputation for ruthless purging. I prefer a gentler, more mindful approach.
Rather than asking, “Does this spark joy?”, try asking:
Does this support the way I live now?
Does this item feel calm, useful or beautiful?
Is it adding visual noise?
Clutter isn’t just physical; it’s cognitive. A crowded room subtly drains energy. Clearing surfaces — particularly bedside tables, kitchen worktops and entryways — can create an immediate sense of mental clarity.
If you need inspiration for mindful living, consider the philosophies popularised by figures such as Marie Kondo — but interpret them through your own lens and lifestyle.
3. Reconnect With Nature Indoors
Biophilic design isn’t a passing trend; it’s rooted in our innate connection to the natural world.
Introduce fresh greenery — even a few sculptural stems in a simple ceramic vase can shift the atmosphere. If you’re confident with houseplants, consider varieties known for their air-purifying qualities, such as peace lilies or snake plants.
Natural materials are equally powerful. Swap synthetic cushions for linen or cotton. Layer in woven baskets, jute rugs or light timber accessories. These textures add warmth while grounding the space.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a garden, create a stronger visual dialogue between indoors and out by echoing colours or materials across both spaces.

4. Refresh Your Colour Palette
Spring is synonymous with softness and subtle vibrancy.
This doesn’t require repainting the entire house (unless you fancy it). Instead, introduce seasonal colour through:
Cushions
Throws
Fresh bed linen
Artwork swaps
Tableware
Think gentle sage, chalky blues, warm neutrals and delicate florals. Even a small shift in palette can alter the emotional temperature of a room.
The psychology of colour is profound — greens promote balance, blues soothe, and warm whites create openness.
5. Upgrade the Air You Breathe
The air we breathe shapes our health every single day, and indoors it matters even more, since we spend most of our lives inside our homes. Good indoor air quality supports deeper sleep, clearer thinking, better immune function, and long-term respiratory health.
Creating healthier air starts with simple steps: increasing natural ventilation, using high quality filtration (both in HVAC systems and with standalone purifiers), reducing sources of pollutants like harsh cleaners and synthetic fragrances, and of course choosing low-VOC paints, finishes, and furnishings.
Even small changes, such as opening windows regularly, maintaining humidity between 40 and 50 percent, and incorporating plants for visual calm, can significantly uplift the atmosphere of a home. Investing in clean air is one of the most powerful and immediate ways to improve wellbeing for everyone who lives in the space.
We often focus on what we see, but wellness is multisensory.
Open windows daily, even briefly - even in winter - Cross-ventilation is transformative. If you live in an urban area, an air purifier may be a worthwhile investment.
Introduce subtle scent layering:
A fresh eucalyptus bunch in the shower
A high-quality essential oil diffuser
Naturally scented candles in spring florals or citrus

6. Create a Restorative Corner
Every home benefits from a pause point — a dedicated space to slow down.
It needn’t be elaborate. A comfortable chair, a small side table, soft lighting and perhaps a stack of books. Consider works such as The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking, which beautifully explores the art of creating cosy, restorative environments.
This corner becomes your morning coffee ritual spot, your journalling space, or simply somewhere to sit quietly without a screen.
Designating space for rest is a powerful statement: wellbeing is not an afterthought.
7. Reassess Your Bedroom Sanctuary
Spring renewal should always include the bedroom.
Switch to breathable bedding — cotton percale or linen are ideal. Store away heavy throws and winter palettes in favour of lighter layers.
Clear technology from bedside tables where possible., and if you can from the room entirely. Introduce a small lamp with a warm bulb rather than relying on harsh overhead lighting in the evening.
Your bedroom should signal safety and softness the moment you enter. Think hotel-level calm — edited, elegant, intentional.

8. Simplify Your Surfaces
Visual calm equals mental calm.
In kitchens and bathrooms especially, reduce countertop clutter. Decant everyday essentials into beautiful containers. Store duplicates out of sight.
Even something as simple as replacing mismatched soap dispensers with cohesive pieces can elevate the room from functional to restorative.
Spring renewal is often about refinement rather than replacement.
A Gentle Reminder
Refreshing your home for spring isn’t about achieving a showroom aesthetic. It’s about recalibrating your environment to support how you want to live over the coming months.
Open the windows. Clear the corners. Bring in greenery. Lighten the palette. Create moments of softness.
When your home feels lighter, you do too.
And that, ultimately, is what spring renewal is all about.
